Purpose-Built Pumping and Temperature Control for a Two-Year Hire
For specialised industrial applications, supplying a storage tank is only one part of the solution.
The product being stored, the required operating temperature, the customer’s transfer process and the equipment already installed on site all influence how the complete storage package must be designed.
In this project, PETRO Hire was approached by a customer requiring a 12,000L LT Tank for the storage and transfer of emulsion over an initial two-year hire period.
A standard tank and pump arrangement would not meet the operational requirements. The customer needed a purpose-built solution capable of storing the emulsion, maintaining the required temperature and transferring the product through equipment designed specifically for its application.
The Challenge
Emulsion must be handled within defined operating conditions to support reliable storage, pumping and transfer.
If the product temperature falls outside the required range, its flow characteristics can change. This can affect pumping performance, transfer efficiency and the reliability of the customer’s wider process.
The customer therefore required more than additional storage capacity. The complete system needed to support temperature management from the tank through the pumping and transfer equipment.
The project requirements included:
- 12,000 litres of emulsion storage
- A long-term, two-year hire arrangement
- Custom pumping equipment suited to the customer’s process
- Insulated pipework to help retain the required temperature
- Controlled transfer of emulsion into the customer’s system
- An integrated electrical control arrangement
- Protected equipment suitable for an industrial environment
- A solution that could be delivered without the customer purchasing permanent infrastructure
Rather than attempting to adapt a conventional hire tank after it arrived on site, PETRO designed the pumping and transfer package around the application before deployment.
The PETRO Hire Solution
PETRO Hire supplied a 12,000L LT Emulsion Tank and customised the associated pumping, pipework and control equipment to meet the customer’s specific requirements.
The tank’s protected service compartment was fitted with an engineered pumping system incorporating the required pump, valves, fittings, flanged connections and electrical controls.
The arrangement was designed to provide the transfer path and operating control required for the customer’s emulsion-handling process.
Because temperature was critical to the application, the relevant process pipework was fitted with insulation and protective lagging. This helped reduce heat loss through the transfer system and supported the consistent movement of the temperature-sensitive product.
Locating the equipment within the enclosed service compartment also helped protect the pump, controls and pipework from the surrounding industrial environment while keeping the system accessible for inspection and maintenance.
The result was a fully integrated hire package—not simply a tank delivered with a generic pump attached.
Engineered Around the Customer
Every element of the equipment package was considered in relation to how the customer intended to receive, store and transfer the emulsion.
The customised system included:
- A heavy-duty 12,000L LT storage tank
- Purpose-selected pumping equipment
- Customer-specific pipework and connections
- Insulated and lagged emulsion lines
- Integrated isolation and control valves
- Electrical control equipment
- Process monitoring instrumentation
- A protected and accessible service compartment
- Clearly identified product-flow directions
By completing the engineering and fit-out before deployment, PETRO Hire was able to provide a system prepared for integration into the customer’s operating environment.
This reduced the amount of modification required on site and gave the customer one coordinated solution for storage, pumping and temperature-conscious product transfer.
Why Long-Term Hire?
The customer required the equipment for two years—long enough to justify a highly customised solution, but not necessarily long enough to make purchasing permanent infrastructure the preferred option.
A long-term hire arrangement allowed the customer to access purpose-built equipment while avoiding the upfront capital expenditure associated with purchasing, engineering and commissioning its own tank system.
It also aligned the equipment cost with the duration of the operational requirement.
Rather than being left with a specialised asset once the project or contract was complete, the customer could use the tank for the required period and then return it at the end of the hire.
The arrangement provided:
- Predictable equipment costs across the hire term
- Reduced upfront capital investment
- Access to a customised solution
- Equipment aligned with the project duration
- Flexibility if the operational requirement changed
- Support from a specialist tank and fluid-handling provider
Maintaining Product Condition
For temperature-sensitive products, the performance of the storage and transfer system can have a direct effect on day-to-day operations.
The addition of insulation and lagging helped maintain temperature through the pipework and reduce unnecessary heat loss while the emulsion moved through the pumping system.
This supported more consistent product flow and helped the equipment operate within the conditions required by the customer.
The integrated controls and monitoring equipment provided operators with a central point from which to manage the system, while the enclosed pump compartment kept the customised equipment protected and organised.
Together, these features created a storage package designed around the characteristics of the product—not merely its volume.
Custom Hire Without Compromise
This project demonstrates how PETRO Hire can adapt its equipment to meet applications that fall outside a standard tank-and-pump arrangement.
By combining a 12,000L LT Tank with custom pumping equipment, integrated controls and lagged process pipework, PETRO Hire delivered a solution suited to both the emulsion and the customer’s long-term operational requirements.
The two-year hire gave the customer access to specialised infrastructure without the commitment of purchasing a permanent system.
Most importantly, the solution was engineered around the job from the beginning.
