On-Site Fuel Storage that grows With the Project

Supporting a Major Water Infrastructure Upgrade with PETRO Hire

Representative Project Scenario

When construction begins on a major infrastructure project, reliable access to fuel can be just as important as access to the equipment itself.

In this representative scenario, a civil construction contractor was engaged to install new water pipelines servicing a development area earmarked for thousands of future homes. The project extended across a large and progressively changing worksite, well away from convenient service station access.

With graders, excavators, loaders and other diesel-powered equipment operating throughout the day, the contractor needed a dependable way to keep machinery fuelled without constantly sending operators or support vehicles off-site.

The Challenge

A temporary site compound had been established near the project’s main work area. It included portable site offices, secure equipment storage and a lay-down area where machinery was parked during downtime.

The compound provided a logical location for fuel storage, but the contractor did not want to invest in permanent infrastructure for a temporary and continually evolving project.

Relying on nearby service stations was also impractical. Heavy equipment would either need to leave the worksite or fuel would need to be transported in smaller quantities. Both options could consume valuable working time, increase vehicle movements and interrupt the daily construction program.

As the pipeline installation progressed, the contractor also expected fuel demand to change. More machinery would be brought onto the project during peak earthworks, while equipment requirements would reduce as individual stages were completed.

The fuel solution therefore needed to be:

  • Available directly on site
  • Suitable for a temporary project compound
  • Flexible enough to accommodate changing fuel demand
  • Easy to relocate as the work front progressed
  • Capable of supporting several items of heavy equipment
  • Secure when the site was unattended

The PETRO Hire solution

PETRO Hire supplied two 4,500-litre PC Cube self-bunded fuel tanks, providing the project with a combined safe-fill capacity of 9,000 litres.

Positioned within the secure site compound, the tanks created a practical refuelling point for the project’s graders, excavators, loaders and support vehicles.

The compact footprint of the PC Cube tanks allowed both units to be installed without taking over the limited space available around the site offices and equipment storage area. Their self-bunded construction also provided an integrated secondary containment solution without requiring the contractor to construct a separate permanent bund.

Each tank was configured with the dispensing equipment required for convenient on-site refuelling. Operators could bring machinery to the compound, refuel and return to work without making the lengthy trip to an off-site service station.

Why two Tanks?

Hiring two 4,500-litre tanks offered several practical advantages over relying on a single larger permanent installation.

Together, the tanks provided sufficient storage to support the project’s working fleet while giving the contractor greater operational flexibility. Fuel deliveries could be planned around site consumption, helping reduce the risk of machinery sitting idle while waiting for fuel.

The two-tank arrangement also created a modular solution. As the project moved through different construction stages, the contractor could retain both tanks during periods of high fuel demand or reduce the hire arrangement when fewer machines remained on site.

The tanks could also be repositioned or deployed separately if the construction program developed multiple active work fronts.

This is where equipment hire becomes especially valuable: the fuel infrastructure can grow, move or scale back with the project.

Keeping the project moving

Bringing bulk fuel storage directly to the worksite helped reduce unnecessary equipment travel and placed fuel where it was needed most.

Instead of losing productive time travelling to a service station, operators could refuel during planned breaks, at the beginning of a shift or when machinery returned to the compound. This supported better daily scheduling and helped supervisors keep critical earthmoving and pipeline installation activities moving.

The arrangement also gave the project team improved control over fuel availability. With 9,000 litres of combined on-site capacity, deliveries could be coordinated proactively rather than reacting when individual machines were already running low.

For a project working toward tight construction milestones, this helped minimise avoidable interruptions and maintain momentum across the site.

A solution that changes with the job

Infrastructure projects rarely remain static. Work areas move, equipment numbers change and fuel consumption rises and falls throughout the construction program.

Purchasing permanent fuel infrastructure can leave a contractor with equipment that is no longer required once the project is completed. Hiring provides an alternative that aligns the fuel solution with the actual duration and changing requirements of the job.

With PETRO Hire, additional tanks and dispensing equipment can be introduced as activity increases. When the project begins winding down, the hire fleet can be reduced accordingly.

For this water infrastructure project, two 4,500-litre PC Cube tanks provided the right balance of capacity, portability and flexibility—helping keep essential construction equipment fuelled while the pipeline continued towards a development that would eventually support thousands of new homes.

More Than a Tank: A Custom 12,000L Emulsion Storage Solution

Purpose-Built Pumping and Temperature Control for a Two-Year Hire

PETRO Hire supplied a 12,000L LT Emulsion Tank and customised the associated pumping, pipework and control equipment to meet the customer’s specific requirements.

The tank’s protected service compartment was fitted with an engineered pumping system incorporating the required pump, valves, fittings, flanged connections and electrical controls.

The arrangement was designed to provide the transfer path and operating control required for the customer’s emulsion-handling process.

Because temperature was critical to the application, the relevant process pipework was fitted with insulation and protective lagging. This helped reduce heat loss through the transfer system and supported the consistent movement of the temperature-sensitive product.

Locating the equipment within the enclosed service compartment also helped protect the pump, controls and pipework from the surrounding industrial environment while keeping the system accessible for inspection and maintenance.

The result was a fully integrated hire package—not simply a tank delivered with a generic pump attached.

    On-Site Fuel Supporting a Large-Scale Landscaping Project

PETRO Hire supplied a self-bunded diesel tank configured with an iPETRO Lite Fuel Management System for convenient and controlled on-site dispensing.

The tank was positioned in a designated area where landscaping crews could access it at the beginning of the day, during scheduled breaks or when equipment returned to the central compound.

By bringing bulk diesel storage directly to the project, the contractor created a reliable refuelling point for its compact excavators, loaders, commercial mowing equipment and other diesel-powered machinery.

The iPETRO Lite system provided an additional layer of control by recording each refuelling transaction. Authorised operators and individual pieces of equipment could be identified, allowing the contractor to see who accessed the tank, which machine was refuelled and exactly how many litres were dispensed.

Transaction data was integrated with the iPETRO VMI Cloud platform, giving the contractor convenient access to its site fuel information and reporting.
